Stocky, robust little dogs standing 12 to 14 inches, Miniature Schnauzers were bred down from their larger cousins, Standard Schnauzers. The bushy beard and eyebrows give Minis a charming, human-like expression. The hard, wiry coat comes in three color patterns: salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black. Created to be all-around farm dogs and ratters, they are tough, muscular, and fearless without being aggressive.
The Miniature Schnauzer is a bright, friendly, trainable companion, small enough to adapt to apartment life but tireless enough to patrol acres of farmland. They get along well with other animals and kids. Minis are sturdy little guys and enjoy vigorous play. Home and family oriented, they make great watchdogs.
At Skyline Miniature Schnauzers, we have taken something which started as a family passion and have continued bettering the breed following the AKC breed standard. We breed our schnauzers to have friendly dispositions that fit seamlessly as incredible family pets. We breed responsibly and according to the best practices of the trade, which makes us the best choice for your next fur baby. All of our babies are born and raised in our home. Our dogs are not kenneled they live with us as family.
Miniature Schnauzers are adaptable. They can be just as happy living in a city apartment getting a couple of walks each day as they can be on a country estate with lots of room to run.
Because the breed is somewhat fearless around other dogs, it is important to introduce a Miniature Schnauzer to other dogs while still a puppy.
Miniature Schnauzers are sociable dogs that love to be with their people. Their deepest need is to be fully included in family activities, whether those activities center on watching television or going out for a run.
Because they do not shed, these dogs are ideal for people who are allergic to other breeds. However, they need to be groomed regularly; frequent brushing, hair and nail trimming, and periodic clipping and stripping are necessary.
Miniature Schnauzers age gracefully; they do not show signs of age until late in life. The average life expectancy is 12 to 14 years.
Health Testing
AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T. program is meant to improve the health and well-being of purebred dogs. We have made a commitment to breeding better dogs through education and health testing.
Embark DNA genetic health testing Has been done on all of our parents. Everyone has tested clear for degenerative myelopathy (SOD 1A) a progressive degenerative disorder of the spinal cord, tested clear for myotonia congenita (CLCN1 Exon 7) a muscular disorder, and tested clear for a full range of genetic diseases including those of the eyes, kidney, bladder, brain, spinal cord, heart, gastrointestinal system, neuromuscular, skin & connective tissues.
As well as genetic testing everyone has been tested with an ophthalmologist and is OFA certified and clear of PRA. The mission of OFA is to promote the health and welfare of companion animals through a reduction in the incidence of genetic disease. Schnauzers are prone to PRA through genetics’ causing them to go blind bu the time they are two. The only test available is with an ophthalmologist.
